How To Get UAE MOFA Attestation in India

Do you have a certificate or document issued in India that needs to be officially recognised in the UAE? This guide walks you through UAE MOFA attestation in India, step by step, so your document is ready the day you land.

Can You Get UAE MOFA Attestation in India?

Yes. The UAE Embassy in New Delhi and the UAE Consulate in Mumbai issue a digital attestation that, according to the embassy’s official page, covers both the embassy attestation and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation in a single application. In other words, UAE MOFA attestation in India is completed before you travel, and your certificate no longer needs a separate MOFA visit once it reaches the UAE.

Steps for UAE MOFA Attestation in India

Step 1 of 4

Authentication by the State

The chain starts with the state that issued the certificate; the department depends on the document type, as the table below shows.

Previous

Step 2 of 4

Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)

You need regular attestation here, not an apostille, because the UAE is not a member of the Hague Convention. Our guide to apostille attestation explains why.

Step 3 of 4

Submit the Online Application

Apply on the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs website using your UAE PASS digital ID, select India as the issuing country, and pay the fees online.

Final step

Hand Over the Original for Inspection

Drop the original at a VFS or BLS centre, or have a courier collect it from your address. The embassy inspects the original with its live stamp, attests it, and the document comes back to you ready to use.

Document type First authority in the state
Degree and diploma certificates Department of Higher Education (HRD in many states).
Birth, marriage and death certificates Home Department or General Administration Department (GAD).
Powers of attorney and affidavits Signed before a notary or lawyer in India.

Is UAE Embassy Attestation the Same as MOFA Attestation?

They are two different authorities. The embassy in India verifies the Indian MEA stamp, while the ministry gives the document its legal standing inside the UAE. Digital attestation now combines both in one application. The UAE Embassy in the UK works the same digital way, as our guide to UAE embassy UK attestation explains. If your certificate only carries an older paper sticker from the embassy, it will usually still need MOFA attestation in Dubai.

Do not confuse this with the Indian Consulate in Dubai, which mainly handles UAE documents heading to India. That route is covered on our Indian embassy attestation page. If you live in Sharjah and need a power of attorney for use in India, see our guide to power of attorney attestation through the Indian embassy for Sharjah residents.

What Are the Fees and Processing Times?

The cost of UAE MOFA attestation in India is split across three parties: state fees, which vary from one state to another; the MEA, whose Citizen Charter describes regular attestation as free of charge, with a nominal fee when submitted through its outsourced agencies; and the embassy and service fees shown when you submit the application.

State authentication takes from a few days to several weeks. The MEA needs three working days, the original is collected within 24 hours of applying, and it returns 24 to 48 hours after attestation. Once the MEA stage is done, the steps we coordinate usually take up to five working days.

Note that VFS terms do not allow cancellation once an application is submitted and paid, and service and delivery fees are not refunded if a document is rejected. Check your certificate before you apply.

Does It Cover Degree, Marriage and Birth Certificates?

Yes. UAE MOFA attestation in India covers personal and commercial documents issued there, except commercial invoices and certificates of origin:

  • Degree certificates: required for work visas and professional licensing; attesting the transcript alongside is advisable. If your final certificate has not been issued yet, read our guide on provisional certificate attestation.
  • Marriage certificate: needed to sponsor a spouse, and must be submitted in the original. What comes next is explained in our guide to marriage certificate attestation in the UAE.
  • Birth certificate: needed for children’s residence visas and school registration, also submitted in the original.

For other documents, see our page on certificate attestation in Dubai.

Can Someone Complete the Attestation on Your Behalf?

Yes. A family member or an authorised agent usually handles the state and MEA stages. You do not need to appear at the embassy: whoever represents you can drop the original at a VFS or BLS centre or hand it to the courier. The application is submitted from a UAE PASS account, so if you do not have one, contact us and we will advise on the best route for your case.

Can You Send Your Documents by Courier?

Yes, within India. After payment you receive the airway bill and collection date by email; print it, attach it to the document, and collect the original later with valid ID. If the certificate is already with you in the UAE, however, UAE MOFA attestation in India cannot start until you ship it to someone who can represent you there, because the embassy only attests originals physically present in India.

Mistakes That Delay Indian Document Attestation

  • Requesting an apostille: the UAE does not recognise it, and documents with a bundled apostille are rejected.
  • Laminating the certificate: laminated documents cannot be attested.
  • Sending a copy instead of the original: the embassy inspects the original and its live stamp.
  • Taking the original out of India too early: you will have to send it back.
  • A name that does not match your passport: a single-letter difference can stall the process.
