Marriage Certificate Attestation in the UAE: Steps and Requirements

Marriage certificate attestation in the UAE is a chain of official stamps that gives your certificate legal standing before government and private entities in the country. If the certificate was issued abroad, it must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country, then by the UAE Embassy there, then by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and finally translated into Arabic if it is written in another language.

It is a familiar story: every other document for a spouse’s residence visa is ready, and the application stalls on this one piece of paper. This guide walks through each route in detail, the documents you will need, the conditions a certificate must meet to be accepted, and how long each route takes.

What Is Marriage Certificate Attestation?

Marriage certificate attestation is a formal procedure in which a series of government authorities confirm that the certificate was genuinely issued by the competent body, and that the stamps and signatures on it are authentic. None of these authorities examines the marriage itself; each one verifies the stamp that came before it. The foreign ministry in the issuing country confirms the court or civil registry stamp, the UAE Embassy confirms that ministry’s stamp, and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms its own embassy’s stamp. That unbroken chain is what makes a foreign certificate valid before UAE authorities.

This is also why no link in the chain can be skipped or reordered: a stamp with no valid stamp before it has nothing to confirm.

Why Do You Need Marriage Certificate Attestation in the UAE?

An attested marriage certificate is required for any official transaction that depends on proof of marriage. The most common are:

  • Sponsoring your husband or wife for a residence visa. This is by far the most common reason. The UAE government portal states that a resident sponsoring his wife must prove the marriage with an attested marriage certificate in Arabic, or duly translated into Arabic by a certified translator.
  • Registering a newborn and obtaining birth certificates and passports for your children.
  • Enrolling children in school as dependants of both parents.
  • Adding a spouse to employer-provided health insurance.
  • Family matters before the courts, such as custody, maintenance and inheritance.
  • Joint banking and property transactions that require proof of marital status.

In the opposite direction, couples who married in the UAE need their certificate attested to register the marriage with the authorities in their home country, add a spouse’s name to a passport, or complete a residence or immigration application elsewhere.

Steps for Attesting a Marriage Certificate Issued Outside the UAE

If your marriage certificate was issued in another country, it passes through the following stages, in exactly this order. Use the “Next” and “Previous” buttons to move between the steps:

Step 1 of 5

Certification by the Competent Court in the Home Country

The process starts with the authority that issued the certificate or registered the marriage: the competent court, the civil registry or the marriage registration office, depending on the country’s system. At this stage you need an official marriage certificate certified by that authority, bearing its stamp and the signature of the responsible officer.

A practical tip: before you leave, check that both spouses’ names on the certificate match their passports letter for letter. A single spelling difference can hold up a residence visa later, and correcting it from abroad is far harder than correcting it while you are still there.

Previous

Step 2 of 5

Attestation by the Home Country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or an Apostille

The certificate then goes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country, which attests the stamp of the authority that issued it. In countries that belong to the Hague Convention, this attestation usually takes the form of an apostille issued by the designated authority.

Some countries also require an intermediate stamp before the foreign ministry, such as the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior or a local authority. One important point: the UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille does not replace the next two steps. It is simply the stamp the UAE Embassy builds its own attestation on.

Step 3 of 5

Attestation by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in the Home Country

The certificate is submitted to the UAE Embassy or Consulate in the issuing country, which attests the foreign ministry’s stamp. This is the step many people overlook, even though it can only be completed in the issuing country itself and cannot be made up for from inside the UAE.

This is usually where we come in: we coordinate with the UAE Embassy in that country and send a courier to collect the original certificate from the address you give us there, then follow its attestation through, so you do not need to travel.

Step 4 of 5

Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs

This link completes the marriage certificate attestation and gives the certificate full legal effect in the country. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests its embassy’s stamp, and the certificate is then accepted by federal and local authorities across all seven emirates, from residency departments to courts and schools.

The ministry requires the certificate to be an original, unlaminated document carrying every earlier stamp. You can review the general conditions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation guide, or on our page about MOFA attestation in Dubai.

Final step

Translating the Marriage Certificate into Arabic

If the certificate is written in a foreign language, the last thing it needs before submission is a certified legal translation into Arabic. The translation is done once all the attestations are complete, so that it covers the stamps as well as the certificate text.

Certificates issued in English are no exception when they are being submitted for a residence visa, since the certificate must be in Arabic or translated into Arabic for that purpose. We arrange this translation as part of the same transaction through our certified legal translation service; rates for each language are in our guide to the marriage certificate translation price.

Leave the attestation steps to us. Once your certificate has been attested by its home country’s foreign ministry, Insta Attestation Services takes care of everything after that: coordinating with the UAE Embassy there, collecting the certificate by courier, UAE MOFA attestation and the certified translation, until it reaches you ready to submit. A simple, smooth process with no queues, no chasing and no hassle. Message us on WhatsApp or call us to get started.

How Long Does It Take to Attest a Foreign Marriage Certificate?

The first two steps take place in the issuing country, and how long they take varies widely from one country to another. The part we handle after that, from UAE Embassy attestation to UAE MOFA attestation and delivery, normally takes up to five working days, depending on the country and the speed of courier services there.

Attesting a UAE-Issued Marriage Certificate for Registration Abroad

The second situation is just as common: a couple married before Dubai Courts or another competent authority in the UAE, and now need to register the marriage in their home country. The route for this kind of marriage certificate attestation is shorter and has two steps:

  1. Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If the certificate was issued and attested electronically, as most certificates from Dubai Courts are today, simply send us the PDF exactly as issued, with its electronic stamp, and we will have it attested by MOFA and return it to you within one working day. If it is a paper certificate without electronic attestation, our courier collects it from your address in any emirate and returns it to you attested.
  2. Attestation by your home country’s embassy or consulate in the UAE. After the MOFA stamp, the certificate goes to the embassy of the country where it will be registered, so that its authorities will accept it. Each embassy has its own requirements; some ask for the Arabic certificate to be translated into their language or into English by a certified translator, as is the case at the Indian Consulate in Dubai. You will find more on this stage on our document legalization services page.

Once both steps are complete, the certificate is ready to be submitted to the authority that registers marriages in your country.

Married in the UAE? Send us your certificate file on WhatsApp. It could be back with you, attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the next working day, and we will then complete your embassy’s attestation as part of the same transaction.

Requirements for Marriage Certificate Attestation in Dubai

Documents required

You do not need a thick file of paperwork. In most cases, the following is enough:

  1. The original marriage certificate, attested by the issuing country’s foreign ministry if it is foreign, or the original electronically attested PDF if it was issued in the UAE.
  2. A copy of both spouses’ passports or Emirates IDs.

Some embassies may ask for additional documents depending on the country and the purpose of the attestation. We will tell you before we begin, so that a missing paper does not delay the process. The table below summarises the difference between the two routes:

Certificate issued outside the UAE Certificate issued in the UAE
Most common purpose Sponsoring a spouse in the UAE Registering the marriage in the home country
Attestation route Competent court, home-country foreign ministry, UAE Embassy there, UAE MOFA, then translation UAE MOFA, then the home country’s embassy in the UAE
What we need from you The original certificate, attested by the issuing country’s foreign ministry The electronically attested PDF, or the paper certificate
Timeline Up to 5 working days for the part we handle One working day for MOFA attestation
Personal attendance Not required Not required

Conditions for a certificate to be accepted

Authorities reject many certificates for formal reasons that could easily have been avoided. Before you send yours, make sure it meets the following conditions:

  • Issued by a competent official authority, such as a court or civil registry, not a ceremonial or religious document that was never registered with the state.
  • An original, since neither a photocopy nor a certified true copy is accepted in its place. We explain the difference between the two procedures in our guide to certified true copy attestation in Dubai.
  • Not laminated, because lamination prevents the stamp from being applied.
  • Clear, intact stamps and signatures, with every earlier stamp present and in the correct order.
  • Spouses’ names that match their passports.
  • In Arabic, or accompanied by a certified legal translation, if it will be submitted to a UAE authority.

Common Mistakes That Delay Marriage Certificate Attestation

Shipping the certificate to the UAE before it is attested in the issuing country. This is the costliest mistake of all. UAE Embassy attestation can only be done there, so the certificate has to be sent back to its home country, and weeks that could have been saved are lost.

Relying on an apostille alone. Many people assume apostille attestation replaces the remaining steps, because it does in many countries. The UAE, however, is not a party to the Hague Convention, so a certificate is not accepted here on the strength of an apostille alone.

Translating the certificate before it is attested. A translation made before the stamps does not cover them, so you will usually be asked for a new translation once the attestations are complete.

Ignoring name spelling. A small difference between the wife’s name on the certificate and on her passport can be enough for a residence application to be sent back.

Frequently Asked Questions About Marriage Certificate Attestation

Do both spouses need to be present for marriage certificate attestation?
No. Our courier collects the certificate from your address, or you send us the PDF if it was attested electronically. Neither spouse needs to attend.

Does an apostille replace UAE Embassy attestation?
No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so a foreign certificate still needs attestation by the UAE Embassy in the issuing country and then by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, even if it already carries an apostille.

My marriage certificate is in English. Does it need to be translated?
If it is being submitted for a spouse’s residence visa, then in most cases yes, since the certificate must be in Arabic or carry a certified Arabic translation for that purpose. We arrange the translation as part of the same transaction.

Can I attest a foreign marriage certificate while I am in the UAE?
Yes, without travelling, provided the certificate has already been attested by the issuing country’s foreign ministry. We coordinate with the UAE Embassy there, our courier collects the certificate from the address you give us in that country, and we then complete UAE MOFA attestation here.

My marriage certificate was issued by Dubai Courts. Do I need to hand over the original?
If it was attested electronically, the PDF exactly as issued by the courts is enough. A screenshot or a scanned copy will not do, because an electronic certificate draws its validity from the original file and its electronic stamp.

How long does marriage certificate attestation take?
One working day for UAE MOFA attestation of a UAE-issued certificate, and up to five working days for the part of a foreign certificate’s attestation that we handle, depending on the country and courier speed there.

Do you serve clients outside Dubai?
Yes. We provide marriage certificate attestation across all seven emirates, and our courier collects the certificate from your address and returns it to you attested.

How much does the service cost?
The cost depends on the country that issued the certificate and the steps it needs. Get in touch and we will explain everything before we begin.
